What If Water Is The Missing Piece?

July 3, 2026

By Jonathan Smith, Founder & CEO, CLR WTR Solutions

A few years ago, if you had asked me what mattered most for my health, I probably would've given you the same answers most people give:

  • Exercise.
  • Nutrition.
  • Sleep.
  • Stress management.
  • Hot yoga.
  • And yes, cold plunges. I love a good plunges.
  • Maybe a few things about mindset, recovery, or spending more time outside.

And while all of those things matter, I've come to realize there's a foundational piece of health that almost nobody talks about.

Not because it's unimportant.

Because it's invisible.

The quality of the water we are putting into our body every single day.

And it's not just something we drink.

It's something we cook with.

Something we make our coffee with.

Something we bathe our children in.

Something we absorb every time we shower.

The truth is, most people know more about what's in their dog food than what's in their tap water.

I know I did.

The Conversation That Sparked A Mission

About five years ago, I was sitting on a plane next to a complete stranger.

I don't usually strike up conversations on flights. I'm typically reading, listening to a podcast, or trying to get some work done.

But for whatever reason, we started talking.

As the conversation unfolded, she mentioned that she was one of the leading autism researchers in the country.

Naturally, I became curious.

She began explaining how researchers were studying environmental exposures, geographic patterns, and the role our surroundings may play in long-term health outcomes. She talked about how certain conditions appear more frequently in some areas than others and how researchers were increasingly looking beyond genetics alone.

Then she said something I'll never forget:

"Where you live matters more than most people realize."

She explained that their researchers found exposure to water quality in different ZIP codes affected the development of children.

I don't remember much else from that flight.

But I remember that sentence.

Because it created a spark inside of me.

A spark that turned into curiosity.

Curiosity turned into learning.

Learning turned into conviction.

And conviction eventually turned into a mission.

The more I learned, the more I realized that water might be one of the most overlooked conversations in modern wellness.

We Filter Everything Except The Thing We Consume Most

Think about how we live today.

  • We buy organic food.
  • We read ingredient labels.
  • We spend money on supplements.
  • We invest in gym memberships.
  • We wear fitness trackers.
  • We buy air purifiers.
  • We spend thousands of dollars trying to optimize our health.

Yet many of us will pour a glass of water from the kitchen sink without having the slightest idea what's actually in it.

That's not a criticism.

It's simply something most of us were never taught to think about.

We assume that if water reaches our home, it's probably fine.

And to be fair, municipal water treatment has been one of the greatest public health advancements in human history.

But I've learned something important:

“Safe” and “optimal” aren't always the same thing. Just like “legal water” doesn’t necessarily equate to “healthy water” or even “safe water” for that matter…

The Goldfish Bowl We Can't See

Imagine spending thousands of dollars improving a goldfish's diet while completely ignoring the quality of the water it's swimming in.

Sounds ridiculous, right?

Yet that's exactly what many of us do.

We obsess over optimizing everything around us while overlooking one of the most important inputs in our lives.

  • The water we drink.
  • The water we cook with.
  • The water we make coffee with.
  • The water we shower in.
  • The water our children bathe in.
  • The water our pets drink.

Water touches nearly every aspect of our day, yet it's one of the last things most people investigate.

Becoming A Father Changed Everything

Then I became a dad.

And everything changed.

When my daughter was born, I found myself looking at the world differently.

Like most parents, I wanted to protect her.

I started thinking about the water she would drink.

The bottles we would make.

The baths she would take.

The environment we would create for her to grow up in.

Something happens when you're responsible for another human being.

You stop asking:

"What's good enough?"

And you start asking:

"What's best?"

Not perfect.

Just better.

That conversation on the airplane may have sparked my curiosity.

But my daughter gave that curiosity a purpose.

She transformed a passion into a mission.

Becoming a father deepened my understanding of what it means to be a protector.

Not through fear.

Not through control.

But through awareness.

Education.

Responsibility.

And taking action on the things within our control.

That perspective ultimately led me to create CLR WTR Solutions.

Today, one of the greatest privileges of my life is helping other families better understand what's in their water so they can make informed decisions for their homes and their health.

Because while I may have become passionate about water from a conversation on an airplane, my daughter gave that passion a purpose.

And for that, I'll always be grateful.

The Luxury We Have Completely Backwards

One of the biggest parts of my job is helping people reframe the way they think about water filtration.

Many homeowners view a whole-home water filtration system as a luxury.

Personally, I think we have it backwards.

A hot shower is a luxury.

Clean water should be a necessity.

If your water heater stopped working tomorrow, you'd still have water.

It just wouldn't be hot.

But if your water contains chlorine, disinfection byproducts, hard water minerals, or other unwanted contaminants, those are things you're interacting with every single day.

  • Through drinking.
  • Through cooking.
  • Through showering.
  • Through bathing.
  • Through virtually every water source in your home.

The reality is that clean water doesn't just impact your health.

It protects your home too.

  • Your plumbing.
  • Your fixtures.
  • Your water heater.
  • Your dishwasher.
  • Your washing machine.
  • Your ice maker.
  • Your coffee maker.

Nearly every appliance that touches water.

I've become convinced that in the future, whole-home water filtration will become as common as smoke detectors and water heaters.

Not because people suddenly became more health conscious.

Because awareness will continue to grow.

And once people understand what's in their water, it's difficult to ignore.

Without A Water Filter, You Are The Water Filter

That's the phrase we use at CLR WTR.

Not because it's clever.

Because it's true.

Every day, your body processes what you eat, drink, breathe, and absorb.

Your body is constantly filtering.

Constantly protecting.

Constantly working on your behalf.

The question is:

How much unnecessary work are we asking it to do?

The goal isn't fear.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is simply reducing unnecessary burdens wherever possible.

That's what wellness is.

Not a single supplement.

Not a single workout.

Not a single health hack.

It's making small decisions, consistently, that move us in a healthier direction.

One Simple Question

Before you buy another supplement...

Before you purchase another wellness gadget...

Before you spend another dollar trying to optimize your health...

Ask yourself one simple question:

Do I actually know what's in my water?

Not what I hope is in it.

Not what I assume is in it.

What is actually in it?

Because if you're already investing in your health, your family's future, and the place you call home, that might be one of the most important questions worth answering.

Final Thoughts

Most people don't need another health hack.

  • They need awareness.
  • They need clarity.
  • They need to understand the foundational inputs that shape their lives every day.

  • Food matters.
  • Sleep matters.
  • Movement matters.
  • Relationships matter.
  • Purpose matters.
  • And yes, water matters too.

Because at the end of the day, wellness isn't built by one massive decision.

It's built by hundreds of small decisions repeated over time.

And one of the smartest decisions you can make is understanding what's flowing from every tap in your home.

You may discover everything is great.

Or you may discover opportunities to improve.

Either way, knowledge is always a good investment.

Because if you're going to put something into your body every day for the rest of your life...

Wouldn't you want to know what's in it?

If you're curious about your water, my team and I offer complimentary water testing and education for homeowners throughout Middle Tennessee.

Because the first step toward better water isn't buying a filtration system.

It's understanding what's already flowing through your home. We are big believers in leading with education and are happy to provide your family with a complementary water assessment and create an estimate for a filtration system tailored specifically to your home and your health goals.
